RICKY GEORGE:  Master Sculptor

A young pioneer at work in the island of St. Lucia. His profound admiration and love for the human anatomy ignites his consuming passion for his figurative depictions.

His relentless pursuit for excellence and for the mastery of the human figure has fueled his interest in Public Art. He was educated at St. Mary’s College in St. Lucia, the Jamaica School of Art, and Johnson Atelier, Princeton, New Jersey.

His life-like depictions of his subjects earned him his most recent commission in 2003. with “The Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy” which was produced for the purpose of awarding the winner of the Double Wicket Cricket Competition in St. Lucia.

Commemorative plaques were also commissioned by the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) in 2001 to honour the indelible contributions of six outstanding St. Lucian citizens; these plaques were installed at The NIC buildings throughout the island.

He also became involved in producing the bronze bust of Sir George F.L. Charles which is presently erected at the Sir George F.L. Charles Airport in St. Lucia. This was commissioned by the St. Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority in 2002.

In 1999, Ricky George was one of the five Caribbean Sculptors commissioned to create VTEC’s Sculpture Gardens. His Sculpture entitled “Androgena” is presently erected at the Sculpture Gardens at VTEC University of Technology, Kingston, Jamaica.

In 1997, the prestigious Bank of St. Lucia commissioned him to create the controversial landmark “The Aftermath”.  The first of its kind is set in isolation to create the effects of its own name.

Other commissions include The Gabriel Charles Memorial which was funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Department of Forestry in 1993 in memory of his contribution towards the preservation of Forestry in St. Lucia and the bronze bust of Sir Arthur Lewis which was commissioned by the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in 1992.

Ricky’s affiliation at an early age with Johnson Atelier, Princeton, New Jersey and  Artworks Foundry in Berkeley, California, galvanized his ambitions to possess total reign over his work from the creative process to the final finished bronze sculpture. His interaction at the various foundries marked his active participation in casting at various levels of works of acclaimed Sculptors such as Arnaldo Pomodoro, Richard MacDonald, John Ruile, Seward Johnson and many more.

The Artist Ricky George can be described as encompassing the following:

“There is no art more dependent on its technical aspects than sculpture. An ignorance of technique limits a sculpture’s creativity, wastes hours of work in brining a cast to a likeness of the original and renders the artist captive of the foundry’s trade secrecy and commercialism.”

- J. Seward Johnson, Founder, Johnson Atelier.
